SAR SCARAB Descender


The NEW SAR SCARAB Descender Ref:RA002
has been designed for Technical Rope Access, Intervention/Special Forces and Rescue with it's prime objective being to try to overcome some of the problems that occur with other devices and comply to the correct European Standard for this type of descender/rope adjustment device.

The European standard for this device is prEN12841-C and NOT EN341 as many people seem to think. EN341 is descenders for rescue and have to be sold as a system with its rope to fully comply.

Over the past ten years the prEN12841 standard has been adjusted to suit the requirements of the users. Testing cannot be done on all rope types, diameters and conditioning as this could take years and the cost be too restrictive, so the user has to understand that each rope used in the device will give a different reading in test’s or feel in use.

Some of the problems in other descenders are creep, too sensitive, panic brakes slow to activate, unable to pull rope through easy or not at all and over complicated in design. With the SAR SCARAB we hope to have overcome all these with the simplicity of its design.

The SCARAB comes in its own harness holster that has been designed so that a karabiner can be left connected or you can connect a karabiner prior to releasing from the holster.

NOTE: All friction brakes create heat which can damage rope if a fall has taken place or on a long fast descent. Any strength quoted is when the product is tested new and is in accordance with the appropriate standards. The SAR SCARAB has been tested in a simulated rescue fall using a 200kg mass, 100kg loaded on the SCARAB and 100kg on a one meter wire sling in a fall factor one scenario. Maximum impact force recorded, 5.7kN, max slip on rope 15cm, rope glazed slightly. No damage to rope or SCARAB. SAR confirms it can be used in RESCUE with two people
